Visiting Benin
It’s the year of return so naturally I booked my flight to Cotonou, Benin where I was born.
Benin is located in West Africa between Nigeria and Togo, it is about the size of the state of Pennsylvania and the National language is French, having a working knowledge of french will be helpful while exploring the country.
Now that we are done with our geography lesson let's talk travel! Traveling to Benin from the US can be a lengthy journey, as there are currently no direct flights (to my knowledge). A typical route will give you a layover somewhere in Europe. Just pack a comfortable neck pillow/blanket and you will be fine.
Because my family is from Benin I have the luxury of just staying with family but there are some beautiful hotels in Cotonou (Check this one out) and coming from the US the currency rate is in your favor, be sure to bring new bills (new $100 bills get you the best rate) to exchange with. Once you are all settled in its time to explore. Here are a few highlights from my trip;
Temple of Pythons in Ouidah - This is a popular tourist spot because you get to see Pythons, and lots of them. Pythons are seen as good omens in this region. You can learn about the royal pythons and even get a picture with one and shop at the gift shop. However its a short visit, the tour is only about 15-20 minutes and some of the guides do speak English.
Ganvie - A town located on water sometimes referred to as the Venice of Africa. You can get a guide and cruise around as a guide details the history and lives of the town dwellers, it's pretty interesting.
The best part of the trip for me was shopping for fabric and getting a few outfits made. All thought there are plenty of places to shop ready to wear outfits its best to get them custom made to ensure perfect sizing and fit as traditional ankara wax fabric has no stretch. I spent some time at a market with my mother as its the best way to grocery shop. The weather was warm the entire week I was there so i packed all summer clothes. I didn’t get a chance to really experience the nightlife but I will save that for my next trip!
